The ESS Bantam Golden Hawks faced Cambridge in a re-match from the previous day, in the finals of the Markkham Stouffville Bantam Classic. The Hawks were faced with adversity from the start. A couple more injuries confirmed that Steph could not start in goal, and the Hawks were down to only 11 skaters. The championship game was also 12-12-12 in length. The longer periods would not work in favour of our depleted line-up. The Hawks came out and outshot the Roadrunners in the first period and defended their net well. As the game wore on, Cambridge outshot Georgina over the balance of the game, but Lizzie was up to the task and held Cambridge off the board. At the end of 3 periods, the score remained 0-0 and the the game went to overtime. The 3on3 overtime period had many scoring opportinities but neither team could score the winner
The Shootout - There were lots of nerves heading into the shootout. Both teams failed to score on their first attempt. Jayda put the pressure on Cambridge by sliding one through the five hole on the second shot of the shootout. Two more Cambridge players could not beat Lizzie and the Golden Hawks were Champions of the tournamnet
It was an excellent game against two evenly matched teams The Golden Hawks really pulled together to play exceptional defence. Lizzie was amazing in earning the 41 minute (plus shootout) victory and shutout. As mentioned,, it was a surprise start for Lizzie due to injury and she responded with a great effort. The ref came over and handed us the game puck to give our goalie for the effort. (Game Stat Sheet)

A nice bonus is that all the defence get involved on the offensive side too. While they may not get on the scoresheet every game, the defence of Robin, Nicolette, Holly, and Katelyn, provide confidence to the whole team with their solid play. (Game Stat Sheet)

The Golden Hawks faced the North Bay Ice Boltz in their first game. The Hawks got a terrible bounce off the back boards in the first minute and North Bay jumped on it for the early lead. The Bantam C Golden Hawks travelled to Milton to play the North Halton Twisters. Unfortuantely no referees showed for the game. The person who volunteeered to do the game was over his head and unqualified. Players on both teams took advantage of the inexperienced ref. The back up that was promised never arrived. Realistically the game should not have been played with the one "referee". The good thing that emerged is the Golden Hawks had to play the game with more intensity than they have all year. North Halton adapted more quickly to the the poor refereeing and clearly won and deserved the 3-0 victory. (Game Stat Sheet).

After 3 practices, the ESS Bantam Golden Hawks played their first exhibition game against the North Halton Twisters. It was an opportnity for the coaches to see how the ladies played as a team. Overall the efort was excellent and was a good starting point for the season. The players showed that they were willing to go out and work hard for the team. The defence was strong and moved the puck well. The offensive lines will take some time to gel together. The Hawks got off to a good start, scoring half way through the first period with a little help from a miscue by the Twisters in their own end. Kayla was awarded the goal and assists to Lauren and Sydney. The Twisters pulled even on the power play, in the last minute of the second period, when a missed shot rebounded out the other side of the net to an open forward. The Equipment Sales and Service Bantam Golden Hawks held a bottle drive to support the team. After most the players spent the night at a team social, the team started early under grey skies. It looked like we would have a good day to run our first fundraiser of the year. With 12 of 15 players, and some dedicated parents, the bottle drive got off to a good start with many donations in advance. As neighbours saw us preparing to head out, people began donating early. Unfortunately the drive was cut a little short due to the rain. It made sorting the bottles a lot of work, as we tried to keep the cases dry. Despite the poor weather conditions, the day was a success with just over $600 raised.
The team owes thanks to our genrous friends and neighbours plus the hard work put in by the girls. An additional thanks to Paul Lefebvre, at the Beer Store, for his patience and understanding.
With under a month to go to the start of the season, it was fun to see the girls starting to come together as a team at the Social and the Bottle Drive
